Power output

Post by k2qpn »

Years ago, I built an ATS4. Had low power output. I wound and rewound the toroids and counted and recounted turns. No help. I discovered that not all toroids of the same type are created equal. Starting with the turns equally space around the toroid, if I squeezed them together (increasing the inductance) and the power drops, then I needed to remove a turn. If the output went up, I needed to add a turn. A pain in the tush but got 5 watts on all bands.

That is one of those common sense things that is utterly obvious once we think about it, but we don't tend to think about it, so we sit there randomly changing things until something works. Thank you for posting it so I will remember to think about it and work smarter as I tune the toroids.
