I have built four of these radios from kits purchased from UP tech. All worked fine. In fact three of them still do.
Last Evening I decided to rewind the Lo band coils on one of the RF boards. It all looked OK to me until I put it to the test. I ensured that the two boards were safely seperated using the case. The rig did not power on but I got a distinct smell of burning so I aborted the test and checked the ATM328 was really hot.
I checked the main board again with another RF board and all seemed OK with ir.
I did some quick checks on the header of the RF board and noticed a short between VCC and GND.
Can anyone offer me some advise please on further checks on the RF board. I am sure the main board has not suffered any damage.

Re: RF board problem
This sounds, as the FETs of the affected RF Board are "through". Unsolder them, and check if it will power up. Most likely yes..... Then replace PA FET(s) and you´re probably good to go.
