1.3 oled display

Post by on7en »

hi everybody

i have bad eyes
i changed the 0.96 display with a 1.29"
look on the well knowed sites for:
1.29 inch OLED Module 1.29" 12864 Screen White Blue 128X64 OLED LCD LED Display Module IIC SPI Interface SSD1315 for Arduino

ssd 1315 is compatible with ssd1306

you have to sacrifice the PA connector and for those who has printed the nice case you need to remove a bit PLA with a cutter

happy building

Nice to know about this option. :!:
My eyes aren't getting any better either and which QRP fan needs a PA socket. ;)

Hey,

That's a beautiful mod. Now, I understand that the OEM display has a small mod done to it which is important enough that there's a warning printed on the PCB reminding us to do so.

What is the equivalent mod on the aftermarket 1.29 screen? I have such a screen in stock but no informtion on how to change it so that it's compatable. I'd have to blow up the radio.

Also - the replacement screen instead of having a SCL pin has a SDK pin. Is that the same use, etc? Might I ask the source of your screen? I have no problem ordering the right thing and waiting for it.

Thanks.

hi ted

i got mine here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003 ... f19c5MOyOV

mods where done like on the forum

remove c3 and c4 and place wire from c6 to voltageregulator
for me scl works the same as sdk
you must be certain that your 1.3" screen has a ssd 1315 controller who is is compatible with ssd1306.
standard controller for 1.3 screens is SH1106. manuals software does not work with SH1106 screens.
you can always remove the old screen, put the new in (even without the mods and soldering, just make shure you have good contact) and check if it works

Jeam-Marie,

Thank you for your detailed reply. I've found a 1.3 screen that conforms to SSD1306, and if that is equal to the SSD1315 as you say, then I will try that one.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/333658640638?

I appreciate your help with this. I ruined one (tr)uSDX by installing a screen that I thought would work but did not. That radio operates by CAT control to some degree so I may be able to recover it some day. The new one just received, I'll try wih the above product unless I hear that it's not actually compatible.

Thanks so much. I appreciate the guidance.

Jean-Marie,

I've ordered a 1.3 display in white and await its arrival in a few weeks. Please, if I may ask at the risk of being redundant - are the back-of-screen modifications the same with this 1.3 screen as for the .96 original screen , i.e. remove C3 and C4, jump from the U-1 to C6? Same circuit but different size? I hesitate to install this without the mods, given the dire warning printed on the radio mainboard.

Thanks very much.

Jean-Marie,

Now I see what my confusion was. I was looking at other options elsewhere, that had the following arrangement:
Wrong 1pt3 screen.jpg
Wrong 1pt3 screen.jpg (18.51 KiB) Viewed 2543 times
Looking at the screen you had ordered, that makeup and the solder points are indeed self-explanatory given prior advice for C4/C5 and for C6/U1. I should have stayed with your recommendation for parts, as I have now done.

As an aside, I have repaired my orignial SDX which I thought I had damaged by incorrectly replacing the .96 screen with the wrong type. It turns out that a white-letter screen with the 8v brightness upgrade works splendedly, so, the radio is NOT destroyed! (Note that the scan rate didn't keep up with the cell phone camera, but one gets the idea. The sky was without clouds and the sun behind me.)

After I upgrade the replacement SDX to a 1.3 white screen with 8v mod, I'll have to decide whether or not to keep both. I was out yesterday and, unlike before the white & bright mods, I could see my frequency and other stuff very well in daylight (provided my body at least shadowed the direct sunlight out of it. This has to be the single greatest mod one can do to this radio and at minimal risk.

Thanks yet again. Perhaps we'll meet on the air soon.

Where is the 8 volt display brightness mod described? Was the 8 volt mod done on recent uSDXs made by Sunny? If so date of cut in. My radio display is quite difficult to see in bright light. Thanks

This covers it. It's completely done by the owner after grabbing a few parts.

wa2t wrote: 01 May 2022, 13:19 Hi,

There is a solution (I've been working on this on and off for a while). Use a 78L08 off of 12V at the interboard connector of the main board. Put a 0.1uF on the output. Connect the 8V output of the 78L08 to C6 of the OLED instead of the wire from OLED Q1 (or U1 as some are labeled). Done.

Good day,

This is one that I purchased in December - https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803563457109.html? It worked quite well until I placed excess force on the bottom edge of the screen where some of the glass extends below the display itself. Doing so, resulted in half of the trace lines disappearing.

That is my doing, and not the fault of the product so I've ordered another one. I'll take steps to prevent excess force from breaking the new screen. I can let you know in early February (when it is said to arrive) and let you know that two screens from the same place are equally suitable.

Here is my 1.29" display install with the 8V mod (I only had a large 8V regulator on hand). I installed the display with flexible wires from a ribbon cable so that I could locate it offset from the existing 4 pin holes to keep the speaker ring intact. I then secured the display, close to the main board so that it wouldn't touch the top cover, with 1/2w resistor leads to the ground pins of the interconnection pins of the main board connector and one to the ground plane grounded regulator pin.

I then trimmed the top cover with a sharp knife to match the display position.
