Choppy audio output JS8Call

Post by KG7YSX »

Hello, I have choppy audio output preventing decode on the other end with JS8Call and FLDIGI, and have run into a troubleshooting wall. I can decode other stations' JS8Call transmissions just fine. I can send and receive perfectly with Winlink/VaraHF, and VaraAC, so I know the radio and computer work to that capacity!

Video exceeds file size limit, so I can't post it, but the sound output on JS8call (as heard through an adjacent transceiver), is normal volume, but sounds as though it cuts in and out in a rapid fire manner. A non-decodable output is viewable on the waterfall of the adjacent transceiver.

Troubleshooting actions so far:
- SWR of antenna checked good
- Computer time synced appropriately
- TruSDX aligned per DL2MAN instructions on Youtube
- LPF Config set to Lo
- PA Bias max set to 128
- Driver deleted and reinstalled. Ensured it is running and minimized prior to usage
- Firmware updated as of yesterday
- Ensured xceiver mode set to USB. I have tried changing JS8 settings mode to none and data/packet as well
- Tried multiple baud rates
- Tried with and without FLRIG (FLRIG works worse)
- Tried with power from micro USB cable only, and also with a 12v power source.
- Tried two different micro USB cables, and added ferrites (ordered another two micro USB data cables just in case)
- Many combos of the following audio settings attempted:
-- Windows audio settings
-- TX Drive
-- JS8Call attenuator slider

I have attached photos of my JS8Call settings, and have tried all manner of combos of those settings.

Computer is a cheap, low power RCA Windows tablet. I have not yet tried an alternative computer. But I reiterate that this radio and computer combo is running VaraHF based programs amazingly well! I'm not using an external sound card; just a micro USB cable.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Drew

I have now attempted to use this on a nicer/faster Dell computer with a better sound card, and there was no improvement.

SOLUTION!:

I found someone who solved the same problem at
https://n1ugk.com/2023/06/trusdx-ft8-wi ... io-cables/

The answer is to increase the polling interval from 1 second to 30 seconds. This transceiver now works on JS8Call with only the micro USB cable.

This is the setting to adjust. 30 seconds.
