Retevis PTT Mic Not Working

I have just purchased the (tr)uSDX radio and also purchased a Retevis ear piece with mic and PTT (model EAK001). I’m using an adaptor from the Kenwood style connector of the ear piece to TRRS, then adapting TRRS to two (audio and mic) TRS males. Which I’m plugging into the appropriate 3.5mm jack for each. When connected the PTT puts the radio in TX but no audio is transmitted. Also, if you tap on the Retevis mic it will cause the radio to TX. Any ideas as to what’s going on here? A friend has this same set up and says his rig is working fine.
