The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
From time to time my unit locks up and I see only this: "Check the PTT Switch". Then the radio ceases to function and nothing else can be done with it. So, I unplug the power, go do chores and let me frustration subside for half an hour and when I plug in, then things seem back to normal. This may or may not be related to an issue with the CW mode over-riding all other choices and sending Dahs constantly, requiring me to un-plug the power and wait. Is there a programming issue with these things or do I have a bad PTT switch on my supplier-built unit? Looking forward to any suggestions. Thanks!

Piper, I am having the same issue today. Did you ever resolve it? I sure hope this new little radio (only 4 days since the first power on) isn't dead.

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
Hello OMs,
had this issue only, as far as i remember, with long key cable splitted for two paddles in parallel.
I have to say that i normally use my (tr)uSDX only for CW
(tr)uSDX has no stray RF protection on the PTT/Key(a) line, because it is also used for ISP Serial Clock.
My suggestion: if it is stray RF into the Mic/Key port due to "long" cabling here you could test to solve it by
use a clip ferrite or a torroid and put 2 to 3 windings of your Mic/Key cable on it
and/or adding a small SMD 10nF capacitor from Tip to Ground in your 3.5mm stereo plug.
Try it and crossing fingers that this solves your problem.

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
Hi all
I am having this problem too.
without anything attached.
It suddenly happenend while switching bands.
off coarse i did "check the PTT switch"
and i did check the push action off the encoder too as i was using that the moment it failed.
what triggers this message underhood ? a short somewhere ?

This is possibly a sensitivity issue of the microphone. Try to attach external Mic, so internal mic is disconnected.

Hi Manuel
Thanks for your reply.
i tried this but it did not help.
well I tried with a empty non soldered jackplug since i don't have a external mic.
i guess what you are saying is that the VOX could be triggerd by
the mic on startup ?
I get a very load howling sound for say 1s on startup.
and no relais are clicking which they normally do.

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
I had a big blob of solder shorting against the 6 pin plug. Fix the blob, put tape over the board under the plug pins, and problem fixed.

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
Thanks for pointing out the 6pin
but unfortunatly i must consider my truSDX dead,
i removed the PTT switch the jack-chassis and the 6pin
with this in my opinion everything connected to PB5
but i am still measuring 0v at PB5/PIN17
if i look at PB4/PIN16 i measure high and i can make that low with my paddle.
i ruined the PCB in the desoldering proccess (i am not good at soldering)
to bad. maybe i buy another one later

Jim,
Did you ever figure out what caused the "Check PTT/key" error? I hope you did. I am building a breadboard uSDX and grounding the PTT/key line (connected to my nano pin d13 doesn't do a thing.
Thanks, Jack in Colorado

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
I now have this problem as well. Went to use it today (and have used it many times before) and the speaker is howling, and it says "Check PTT Switch". Did anyone resolve this?
Looking at the schematic, it appears that the port pin is virtually unprotected from ESD. Perhaps the port pin is taking an ESD hit which fails it into a permanently low state.

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
According to the method you mentioned, I inserted a 3.5 MIC and it has entered normal display
But after unplugging 3.5MIC, there is still the same fault. Where should I modify it?

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
I assume, your mic is soldered in with wrong polarity.
Unsolder your mic, and check polarity.
If it behaves the same without mic, probably the internal switch of the 3,5mm socket is defective.

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
Yes, I have the same issue and suspect defective 3.5mm socket for Keyer. If I "flick" TX key with a finger a couple of times radio starts to work OK.
It works OK if CW keyer is inserted in the socket so it must be something around/within the socket.
I have bought a new socket at Farnell and will replace it to see if that is really the case.

Re: The mysterious "Check the PTT Switch" warning
Hi everyone.
The "Check PTT" warning happened to me yesterday (15/05/2024) for the first time. I bought my (tr)uSDX in April 2024 fully assembled.
I was learning/practicing some CW into a dummy load for about 20 minutes. I switched the rig off and pulled the cable for the key. An hour later when I turned the rig back on, I got that message on screen. I turned it off and back on and the cw mode kept switching between tx and rx. It was OK when I selected USB or LSB. Also, inserting the cw key again stopped the strange behavior too, but pulling the cable it went back to tx - rx cycles.
The only thing that fixed it for me was a "factory reset" - hold ENC while turning on. After that, it was back to normal. I only had to set my "Ref freq" offset again and it seems ok.
I was using an unshielded cable, so that may have been an issue.
