Diagnosing damaged board

Post by MIOIDAR »

I committed the grave error of ignoring one of the directions on the video on tuning the rf board. In my haste, I did not space the boards with part of the case. As a result, I did not notice that the pins where not properly aligned when I plugged in the power. There was a slight bit of smoke and I thought that I had probably bricked the radio but when I got the pins in their proper place, the radio turned on but now as two issues that I know of. The first is that when I push the ptt button while in cw there is a audible tone but the screen does not show any power or efficiency readings. the other is that when I am in the menu screen the enter button does not return to the main screen and when in the main screen all that the enter button does is switch the tune rate like pressing down on the tuning nob does. From these symptoms, what do you all think are the parts that were damaged and need to be replaced?

U4 on the main board has signs of damage. Would it be hard to replace U4? Would I need to reprogram the main board when it is replaced?

YES ! U4 is the ATMega (Main processor). If you change the Brain of the rig, it needs to be re-programmed.
Serial Number will change and we´ll need to enter your new serial in the system before you can download firmware.
It is not hard to change it, IF you have the proper tools (Hot Air soldering equipment) and a calm hand.
I´ve done it with a normal soldering iron as well, but this requires way more experience and trick in order not to damage the PCB.
Find someone with Hot Air soldering equipment (or buy a Set from China) and it will be an easy task.
