Expected Power Output

Post by w0pm »

I just purchased an assembled (tr)uSDX from the same company that is approved to sell the kits on Amazon.

I own a commercial 2-way shop and have been doing tech work for over 45 years. So I've aligned a few radios here and there. :)

I used a service monitor/spectrum analyzer with tracking generator to look at the 2nd harmonic filters and they were pretty close. The 80 meter filter was centered at 6.8 Mhz, which was probably ok, but I tweeked it a bit to raise it to around 7.1 to 7.2 Mhz.

I also checked the power output reading on the (tr)uSDX using a General Dynamics service monitor. The power output readings on the (tr)uSDX display were within .1 watt of what the service monitor showed, on all bands. That is amazingly close.

My question here is in regards to expect power output across the bands.

The power supply is set at 12 volts.

14.060 Mhz - 4.3 Watts @ 70.1% efficiency
14.260 Mhz - 3.84 Watts @ 69.8% efficiency
14.350 Mhz - 3.62 Watts @ 69.6% efficiency

10.130 Mhz - 4.57 Watts @ 78.6% efficiency

7.030 Mhz - 4.35 Watts @ 83.5% efficiency
7.260 Mhz - 3.29 Watts @ 82% efficiency

5.351 Mhz - 4.15 Watts @ 83% efficiency

3.560 Mhz - 5.8 Watts @ 77.6% efficiency
3.960 Mhz - 2.54 Watts @ 79.3% efficienty

Are these typical of what I should expect?

Class E is pretty narrow, so yes, this is what you can expect.
Originally -as I´m more the CW guy- I focussed on CW portions of the Bands.
If you´re more the SSB guy, you can tune the filters more towards that.

P.S: Efficiency could be a little bit higher, but you should calibrate RHunt before.

Thanks Manuel! I really appreciate the response and information. I actually operate more on digital modes (such as FT8), so it looks like I'm better off with it where it is now.

But, I like to experiment. I just got some enameled copper wire (magnet wire) delivered today, so I'm ready to wind...
