Oled modification

Post by 9a5yy »

Hello!

Can someone help me to do modification of this Oled. It's easy to remove C3 and C4.
Where to put wire? There is no U2. How to connect with wire top of U2 to the bottom of C6?

I belive U2 is Q1 on your oled.
There are been new oled versions supplied by the Chinese.
But whait for someone to confirm because I still have old oleds in my stock not the new version.

Hi,

Please check continuity between VCC Pin (on the 4 Pin Header) and left Pin of Q1. If there´s continuity, solder Left Pin of Q1 to Bottom Side of C6 as shown in the Pic:

If left side of Q1 is NOT on VCC, you gotta search the pin that is, and connect that one instead to the wire.

Hello Manuel!

I checked continuity between 4 PIN header and Q1.
The pin 3 at 4 PIN header has continuity with number 3 at Q1.
The pin 4 at 4 PIN header has continuity with number 4 at Q1.
The pin 1 and pin 2 at 4 PIN header don't have any continuity with Q1.
The third unmarked pin at Q1 don't have any continuity with 4 PIN header.
If I understand you well, I should connect right pin with number 4 at Q1 with wire to the
Bottom Side of C6 as shown at picture below:

Is this OK?

No. VCC is on Pin 3 of your 4-Pin Header. So connect it as shown in my Pic. (Your #3 to Bottom of C6)
And of course remove the 2 caps.

If VCC is your Pin 4, you have a non matching Display.

Hello!

Thanks for help. Fine, VCC is at #3. I made picture again. I assume my OLED has VCC at #3 not at #4. I was in group buy organized by Stephan, DC8LZ.

Usually the pinout is marked on the front side of the board.

I checked pinout. Yes, pin with #3 at picture is marked with VDD at my OLED. So, it seems I have good OLED.

Hello!

I tried yesterday my (tr)usdx outside at sun. I was unable to read anything at oled display. Indoors no preblems with reading oled at all. Only with shadow of my hand I was able to read characters at oled display. Is there any solution to avoid this case beside using any kind of shadow?

Is there any way to increase/regulate brightness of oled at trusdx?
I found out at some other devices (with similar or same oled display) have higher oled brightness.
What is the purpose of 10.1 Backlight in menu specified in manual? I don't have it.

Most of the Documantation is from uSDX Times, where there was LCD Display with backgrung illumination.
We need to invest some time in proper documentation. But we didnßt find the time to do it, as it is very time consuming and not fun at all :(
Menu 10.1 is no longer existent in (tr)uSDX as we only have OLED´s.

The only way to increase Brightness it to increase Voltage .
So instead of feeding 5V (VCC) to Bottom of C6, you can use 12V instead, but be warned: Depending on OLED Supplier and your system Voltage they can die really fast from that.

This is why I do not recommend this mod.

Hi Manuel,
maybe for a future version I would like to suggest a transflective LCD like Sharp LS013B7DH03 which has a SPI interface, 128x128 pixel and 2uA current consumption at 1 Hz refresh rate. Price is not very high 11.66EUR at 1 pc at DigiKey dropping to EUR 6.98 at 80 pcs.

Apart from the problem to read the display at outdoor operation, it is a great little rig you and Guido have put together.

If you look at the last entry on known issues (in troubleshooting section) it refers to how to supply 8v to OLED, which is what they originally used thru charge circuit. I have finished this mod and my (tr)uSDX is now great outdoor in sunlight.
You need to be careful when feeding this way and use a diode from Q1 to C6 in the line to prevent back feeding 8v to 5v components. Or you get SNAP, SCACKLE and POP.
