Hi having assembled the Ubitx years ago this looks more orientated to what Id intended with that.

With zero sourcing components experience and no practical work related electronic history Im sure Im not up for the collaboration or sourcing components aspect but if theres any UK interest, I absolutely want one and will support a Group buy.
If there is an existing UK interest I will move this query to their thread, so meanwhile Im parking here as I couldn't see other UK Group buy interested parties.

Hi all,

I am the organiser for the UK group buy that started off on the uSDX Groupsio forums. That group buy is full at fifty kits ordered. I don’t imagine anyone will drop out at this stage to be honest.

In this case we weren’t able to get all of the SMD ICs soldered by JLCPCB, so I had to order those ones separately. Many folk aren’t happy with SMD devices, consequently I have quite a bit of work on my hands.

It just needs someone to put their head above the parapet and give it a go. I could possibly do another run, but not before March. Who knows, maybe the devices that were missing may come back in stock by then. If someone takes the job on for you guys I’m very happy to pass on anything that I’ve done (that worked) related to running the group buy.

Ive edited this to be for Round 2 - and once we get the interest levels higher Ill absolutely lean on your experience (and hopefully you'll be keen for round two by then!)

SMD isn't for me with my tiring eyesight either, so I would like to see the PCB's produced with all IC's and any other SMD components fitted by the PCB manufacturer within a bulk run.

Should this be a problem with JLCPCB, apart from a shortage in supply of SMD components spoiling the run, if this is so is it just better to wait a while?

Faraaz, VK Group Buy organiser here.

The SMT component soldering really shouldn't be scary. These are not tiny 0402 parts. These can be easily hand-soldered: see Manuel's videos.

Invest in a ten quid magnifier if your eyesight is really that bad (or go to Wilkos and buy some cheap +3 dioptre spectacles), use lots of flux, pretin the pads, use a pair of tweezers (everyone who owns a soldering iron has one of these -surely?), tack-solder one end and then drag-solder the rest. Plenty of Youtube videos around. Use a magnifying glass to check the quality of your soldering and if in doubt, add more flux.

Or if you are part of a club, surely there are people who will help you out there.

As for the shortages, these are likely to persist for a long, long time. Some of these ICs are OOS for twelve months or more. I don't know about you, but life is too short for waiting!

As I see it we’ve got 11 interested parties after a couple of days ordering 19 kits.

I’m guessing the reason for ordering 2 is as a backup in case one makes a mistake or as a backup/experimental rig (and at the anticipated cost it’s worth it)

I suggest that we revisit who’s ordering once we’ve had feedback from the first group buy, learning from their experiences.

I’d estimate that this’ll be mid February-March

Meanwhile spread the news to clubs and Ham friends and we’ll bring up the numbers to the necessary 50 units
