M3 screw length for enclosure

Post by VE3RRD »

How long should the threaded part of the M3 screws be that hold the enclosure together. I assume that they need to be long enough to extend part way into the upper and lower (back and front) parts but not long enough to run into each other when inserted from the top and bottom.

Good question:
I use and recommend M3x15mm !
but 12mm should also work.

Has anyone tried using the so called "self tapping" screw in M3 size? Or would they possibly crack the 3D print since they would just force their way into the hole. The 20% infill might leave some room for expansion.

Hi Manuel and group,

What style screws are you using? Looks like either flat or wafer Allen head? I am fond of using flat head Allen screws. Assuming the front panel has sufficient material to tolerate a countersink for them, this is what I would like to use. Could you comment?

Hi!

For our group buy I ordered these ones:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/400667842128?var=670216938555

Like them... head is not that high. If he does not ship to your destination you just grab the DIN 7984 M3x12mm and search for that if you like them...

I've ordered Flat head, Wafer head, and Short head (what you ordered), all on AE. They're cheap enough and I am adding to my metric HW collection ;-) I hope to put countersinks in the front panel and use flat heads, but have two other options if that doesn't work out. I think the unit in Manuel's video's is using wafer head but I could be wrong.

Thanks Stephan.

I suppose you could use long screws and put nuts on the back as I think you are suggesting, but Manuel intends shorter screws (15mm I think it was) to go in from both the front and back of the case.
