I plugged the SDX USB port cable to apply power from my Dell Notebook. The screen came up with the bottom half appearing to be random noise. Sure put a scare into me that I did something to compromise my new SDX toy.
T/S mode:
...plugged in the battery power - display no change, bottom half noise.
...removed USB only pwr up via battery - display no change, bottom half noise.
(each subsequent SDX tasks started from pwr OFF; USB connected for SDX pwr)
...unplugged antenna - display no change, bottom half noise.
...unplug audio & mic (only USB connected) - display came back to normal.
So the moral of my story is do NOT power up the SDX with the Audio/Mic ports connected to the PC/Notebook.

Re: Display oops, FYI
It may be possible to verify this behavior on different notebooks.
But I recommend a simple USB sound card anyway.
Something like this, for example:

N6JSX,
Did you try a reset... hold rotary dial down while applying power.. .
All else fails reload firmware!
