Does anyone in the US repair a (tr)uSDX

Post by AI7JN »

I hooked up the power to a defective new power supply (DC voltage looked okay) and my (tr)uSDX smoked. My hands don't work so I can't do the repair. Is there anyone in the US who can repair it, or is it cheaper to buy a new one?

From the technicians standpoint, most electronic gear is about the same. Assuming documentation is available, there's not much difference between a truSDX and an FM stereo receiver.

Point is, any reasonably experienced tech should be able to fix your radio. The real issue, as you've noted, is whether it's cost-effective.

Do you have any sense which part(s) smoked? How does it behave if you try to power it on - totally inert? Some sign of life?

Totally inert. My hands are crippled and I can barely type, so I haven't even opened it up. I hooked up a DC regulator that was supposed to supply a constant output voltage even as the battery input voltage fell off. I hooked it to the battery but the LEDs did not light up. I measured the output voltage at 12.78v so I thought I'd give it a try. I didn't look at ripple. which I wouldn't expect on a dc-dc regulator. When I hooked to to the uSDX the radio came on, buzzed briefly, turned off and smoked until I disconnected the battery. No buttons were pressed. Maybe I'll just buy a kit and have somebody figure it out for me. :D I liked it so well that I have already ordered a new assembled replacement, but I wouldn't mind havibng two.

I live in a rural area so good technicians are hard to find and have all the work they can handle. Anyone who is not intimately familiar with the uSDX will have to spend more time than I can afford learning how to fix it, so I hoped to find a specialist.

The damage is on the mainboard, but I have rev 1.0 and I can't find a good picture of an assembled 1.0 board and the assocated schematic. Note the burnt area around the power input. Can anyone direct me to the appropriate picture and schemaic? Thanks.

Looks like C2, tant 10uF 16v electrolytic
Maybe U2 the 7805

Might have popped if the voltage was reversed or if the voltage was right maybe the cap was installed reversed. If the voltage was backwards you could have other broken stuff also, but you might be lucky.

The electrolytic capacitor (C2) burned up so badly that I cannot even see where it connects. My crippled hands cannot work with tiny components, so I need to cut corners. I have ordered a new kit. My existing boards are Rev 1.0. If I receive an IOboard of a newer Rev such as 2.2, can I mate it with my old 1.0 RF board or will I have to build the new RF board as well? Not being lazy, but I am severely handicapped and have little help at hand.

Take a look

Actually all units produced to date are hw rev 1.0.

Feel free to PM me or email to gx1400(at)gmail.com. I live in Overland Park, KS, if you'd like to ship the board here and pay for any repair parts and shipping back, I'd be happy to try to repair.

I'm an electrical engineer and am comfortable with electronics and troubleshooting.

Happy to see Derek volunteer his services. May I suggest purchasing a replacement main board and components from @Sunny and then ship it to Derek to build for you. Best of luck.
@Derek.. you will need to use the 14 pin connector from original board because the new machined headers are not interchangeable with older square pin headers.

What do you mean? I'm waiting for Classical rf board kit, it's somewhere near in transit. So, I intended to assemble it and simply replace rf board in my original assembled Lo version truSDX. Would it fit? Or would be there some issues with 14pin headers?

Thanks,
Andrey

Andrey,
It depends on if you have an older batch for your first build, and where it was purchased.
Manuel used square pin headers on his original boards. Sunny @ UpTech Store uses round machined headers.

If you have a board with square pin male on the Main board, you may need to purchase a square pin female to install on the new RF board.

I hope that my explanation is good. I can send you photos of each since I own both types of radios.

Bill, thank you for explanation.

My assembled unit is from UpTech. RF board kit was purchased from them either. So, I hope there will be no problems.

So.....
Are the machined round pins or the square pins better? For me, the parameter to judge would be good and reliable continuity despite multiple disconnects and reconnects.
I think I would want all my boards to be interchangable and use all the same kind of connector. Cost plus shipping, what's the best deal to get good quality parts, in fairly small quantity, in the states, and for others, elsewhere? For round and for square. The female square headers from Reichelt and the male square ones from LCSC are not too pricey until you get to shipping them to the states. (but at least I know they are the right size)
